5th Generation Of Computer

The time period of the 5th generation of computer is 1980 onwards. In 1982, the first computer of the fifth generation was developed by Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry. In this computer system, ULSI (Ultra Large Scale Integration) technology was used in place of VLSI (Very-large-scale integration) technology. 

The fifth-generation computer was based on Artificial intelligence (AI) software. Artificial intelligence describes the medium and way of making computers like humans. This was to provide a platform for future developments in artificial intelligence. This is an emerging branch in computer science. 

All high-level programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java, etc., used to be done from the early fifth generation. Logic programming and Massively parallel computing were used in computers. Many types of new technology like Voice recognition, parallel processing, superconductors, quantum computation, and nanotechnology were developed in the fifth generation. The fifth-generation computer responds to natural language input and is capable of learning and self-organization. These 5th generation computers were very powerful and more programmer-friendly compared to previous generation computers.

The Russian government had developed some computers like the Kronos computer as early as the fifth generation computer. Simon’s smartphone invented by IBM in the fifth generation. It was the first smartphone invented by IBM.

Programming Language Used in 5th Generation Computer

Most constraint-based and Logic programming languages and some declarative languages are used in the fifth generation. This generation programming language is based on problem-solving and faster work. The fifth-generation programming language is designed such that the computer is capable of solving problems even without a programmer. The fifth-generation programming languages are mainly used in artificial intelligence research. Many programming languages like OPS5, Prolog, and Mercury are developed in the fifth generation.

These programming language falls in the top 10 programming languages.


OPS5 was developed by Charles Forgey in 1970. It is a short form of “Official Production System”. DEC OPS5 is the extended version of the OPS5 language. DEC OPS5 was developed to use with operating systems like RISC ULTRIX, VMS, and DEC OSF/1.


Mercury is a purely logical programming language. This is used for large programs. It is a reliable and faster programming language. Mercury language allows programmers to abstract their own data types. 


Prolog is also known as rule-based language. It is a high-level programming language. This is a short form of programming with Logic. The syntax of Mercury and the syntax of Prolog are the same.
